COMC Sunday

In case you missed yesterday's NFL Week post at The 1993 I reviewed that year's starting quarterbacks. Tomorrow's grand finale will feature one specific player who was active that year.

Today I've got a Show and Tell post for you because... my COMC order finally arrived! Wouldn't you know it, the box arrived on 12/4. How perfect! Only problem was, it arrived early on a work day. I checked the tracking number when I woke up on Friday, and the USPS website stated that I had signed for it at 6:25 a.m. You'd think I would remember something like that, lol.

So, after waiting months for my order I had to wait another nine hours to get home and open my cards. Some of them had been purchased over a year ago. Not this serial-numbered Ryan Fitzpatrick RC, though. Fitz was one of my most recent purchases - I spent $1.75 on this card in September.

This Christian McCaffrey Aqua parallel (#d/299) was purchased six months earlier for just 95 cents.

This Michael Strahan Gold parallel from 2018 Panini Classics set me back 65 cents.. in January.

When I added the Strahan to my cart I also added the Len Dawson Panini Immaculate base card on the left. It's got a little bit of corner wear (a lot of these cards do) but it only cost 95 cents. A few weeks later I stumbled across the Century Legends relic (#d/100) on sale for $1.82 and decided to double-dip on Dawson.

A couple days later (still pre-pandemic, by the way) I picked up this cool looking Kenny Britt relic/auto numbered to just 30. At $2.25 it didn't cost much more than if I'd asked my boss to get me his autograph. (I don't think she would have anyway.)

I had a backup post planned in case these cards didn't arrive during NFL Week. It would have been based around my Panini Immaculate Collection collection. Perhaps I'll do that one day. For now, I'm happy to finally have this Jordy Nelson Acetate relic in hand. This might be the most I've paid for a Panini Immaculate card. I purchased it for $16.25 during COMC's Black Friday sale. Last year's Black Friday sale.

Assorted Packers pickups. Most of these were 60 cents or less. Davante Adams is #d/99. The Ahman Green Topps gold is #d/2003.

We've arrived at the Brett Favre portion of the post. Here are the sixteen items I ordered over the past year:

The card on the left is a 1996 Pacific Gridiron Gems insert. COMC's listing implied this was a green parallel but they are all green. Also there's some slight corner/edge wear which is typical of oversized issues. I only paid $1.05 for it, and I'm not that picky about oddball items like these. The lenticular box topper on the right isn't even listed on TCDB - unless I'm an idiot and can't find it. COMC lists it as 1998 Premier Replays. I dunno. The back is blank. This one cost $2.20. Both were shipped in complimentary holders. Pro tip - buy oversized cards from COMC, the top loaders are free ;)

More bargain Bretts. All but one of these cost 70 cents or less; the V2 at the top left was $1.20. The 1997 Bowman's Best at the bottom is a preview insert.

Some of my favorite Favre cards here, including a Flashback Fabrics relic numbered 4 out of 399. That one was also purchased in 2019. The 2000 Finest Gems is my third copy of this card. Evey time I see this card there's a crease on the back. This one has a tiny, tiny wrinkle on the back left corner, but I can live with it. I probably overpaid a bit for the 2002 Topps Pristine refractor #d/349 but I didn't mind spending $6.10 for my favorite player in my favorite set.

I'm going to save the baseball, basketball, and hockey purchases for a future post (or two or three) so I'll wrap up this Sunday Show and Tell with perhaps the coolest looking football single of this order.

I'm a sucker for color-matching parallels, and Panini Prizm has dozens of different colors and designs. Most of the current singles are out of my price range, but I spied an older card that I knew would look fantastic in Dolphin blue. When I checked the site to see what Dolphins cards were available I found Dion Jordan here:

This Light Blue Pulsar Prizm parallel is not numbered, and Jordan isn't a star. In fact the #3 overall pick in 2013 was out of the league for two years and is now on his fourth NFL team (the 49ers). All of this explains why I was able to purchase this cool color-matching Prizm for just 63 cents. Doesn't it just make you want to jump in a clear blue ocean and go for a swim?

---------------------------------------

The first entry in my PWE Swap Meet contest has arrived and it's... not a PWE. Reader Ken sent me a box of over 400 football cards, including my 841st unique Brett Favre card. I'm not sure how many entries to give him - I'll probably have to limit it to five, lol.

If you'd like to join the PWE Swap Meet and enter to win a mystery box of baseball cards, football cards, and 9-pocket pages just send me any 4-15 cards (including some football) and a short list of what you collect. I'll hit you back with some cards for your collection, and I'll announce the winner of the prize on December 29th.

Thanks for reading!

  3. Whoa, lots to like here! I'm also a fan of lenticular stuff so I love that Favre, and the V2 card, along with lots of other brands you showed off there. The Britt and Nelson look slick too.

By the way, if COMC gets me my shipment a bit early too I might have a little envelope to send your way before Christmas!

  4. Glad to hear your COMC order has finally arrived. I'm hoping mine will arrive sometime this week.

Here are a few links to help you identify that lenticular Favre:

It's a pretty cool collectible... and one I'd love to add to my Packers collection. Love that Classics Flashback Fabrics card too.

  5. The lenticular Favre and the Dion Jordan look like they would be great to see in person.

  6. It's good to see Panini using some variety with those Len Dawson photos :)

And I'm not familiar with Dion Jordan in the least, but that Prizm of his is one sexy card!

    1. I was just sorting these cards into my collection last night and noticed that the Panini Mosaic Dawson had the same damn photo, too!
