One away

For some reason I haven't felt like talking(writing) about cards. I'm still collecting, buying and trading for set fillers and favorite teams.

A lot of my recent posts have been non-card topics, and I wanted to return "home" to hobby talk, but I'm still feeling too lazy to scan up every new acquisition. I'm also trying to break the habit of making this blog a diary of every hobby-related transaction I make.

I finally bought a Steve Young RC on eBay. The seller asked for $10 but I made a Best Offer of $8 and it was accepted. I was very picky about this card, almost to a fault. It's the second-best card in the set and the second-to-last card I need to complete the set*. Every Steve Young RC I'd seen online had a print bubble on the front, or awful centering, or both. This card might appear to be diamond cut but it's not. I'm just too lazy to re-scan it.

*Technically the Walter Payton card is the last one I need. It's in a COMC order I sent away for five weeks ago; due to arrive in just two more months!

Once the 1986 set is complete I'll focus on the 1987 Topps football set, for no real reason other than continuity. I have no interest in the 1989 Topps set and little interest in the 1985 set, though it does have some personal significance. I can count the football card bloggers on one hand but if anyone here has 1987 Topps football singles for trade hit me up.

Also I added another Hall of Famer to my 1956 Topps graded set. This Enos Slaughter was a bargain at $26.99(plus tax); it's practically impossible to find a mid-grade HOFer under $40. I was briefly scared off by the white spot (paper loss?) on his hat, and the poor centering on the back. Then again I really can't afford to be picky with these - I've still got to get the Aaron, Mays, Campanella, Ford, and many others.

All in all, not a bad way to spend $40. And I got an even better deal this week thanks to eBay's 25th anniversary coupon. I'll save that story for next week.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Meh. I have a lot of '88 Topps. Way less '87, though I do have a few.

    2. I have Walker and Hogeboom, need all the others. I'm setting some cards aside for you so if you want to do the same with these that would be appreciated.

    3. Nah. They're not worth that much. I'll just send them.

  2. I just discovered the '86 football set, I believe it was you that sent me a couple of cards (although I could be wrong). Just purchased a 20 card lot on ebay to get me started. Congrats on the near completion of the set...

That Enos Slaughter is a sweet card also. Well done!

    1. It might have been, I had plenty of dupes to spare (still have a handful if you need more). I'm excited to see the progress of your set build.

  3. I was really hoping the $25 coupon would work for me when I found out about it, but no such luck!

    1. As I understand it, eBay handed out the coupon code based on how long you've had an account. I started mine in 1999 (but somehow I didn't puchase an item until 2001)

  4. I usually post mine as a diary that way, but, haven't been adding much so that part has gone away lol

    1. I've always had that mindset and it's hard to break that habit. But it also gets harder to enjoy the hobby when my first instinct is to scan and discuss each card that comes in the door!

  5. Can't wait to see what you got with your 25th Anniversary coupon. I was pretty stoked when Royals and Randoms shared the code on his blog. And I'm waiting with you on COMC. I schedule to receive my order in mid November and I requested shipment on 8/1.

  7. Even though I've been meaning to, I still haven't looked into the prices for Steve's NFL rookie, but $8 for a nice copy seems pretty reasonable.
